Rudolf Jung (1845-1900)
In 1872, precision engineer, Rudolf Jung (1845-1900) worked with Heidelberg pathologist, Richard Thoma, to develop the first microtome that could be mass produced in series. This marked the beginning of a new era in histology. It became possible to cut tissue samples in reproducible thin sections for microscopic study.
The instrument making business continued after Jung's death in the firm of R. Jung GMBH in Heidelberg. This company distributed its first catalogue in 1911.
