And Many, Many More Great Titles...
This hand colored glass slide is an ORIGINAL and it is NOT a reproduction. It was created to be projected onto the movie theatre screen before the film was released to promote the "coming attraction". Some people in the movie collectible world have said, that, glass slides are much rarer than the paper poster memorabilia from the same film and are very rare pieces of film history.
Format:
Glass Slide: 3 1/4" x 4"
Plot Summary:
Jimmy Connors (Mickey Rooney) and his girl-friend, Mary (Judy Garland) want to take part in Paul Whiteman's high-school bands contest, but they cannot afford the fare. But per chance they meet Paul Whiteman in person and are able to convince him that their band is good enough, so he lends them the money. But then one of their friends becomes seriously ill and has to be carried to a hospital by plane, and they have to use Whiteman's money for this.
Trivia
:
The original camera negative was destroyed in May 1978 during a nitrate film fire in the George Eastman House archives. The fire also destroyed 328 other films' original camera negatives.
The 1930 Broadway production of "Strike Up the Band", with music and lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin, had no relation to the story of this film. That was a political satire that had trouble getting to Broadway, and when it did, it had only a short run of 191 performances. However, the title song became very popular and is included in this film.
"Lux Radio Theater" broadcast a 60 minute radio adaptation of the movie on October 28, 1940 with Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney reprising their film roles.
Partially as a result of this film's enormous success, theatre owners from coast to coast placed both Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland among the Top Money-Making Stars for 1940. Rooney was ranked #1, and Garland placed 10th.
According to MGM records the film earned ,265,000 in the US and Canada and ,229,000 elsewhere resulting in a profit of ,539,000.
The huge and stunning "Do the La Conga" production number was shot in one take after director Busby Berkeley prepared the cast and crew by rehearsing the number for thirteen straight days.

More Info on Judy Garland:
Judy Garland (born Frances Ethel Gumm) was a legendary actress and singer from the 1930s to the 1960s. She was born in 1922, and as a young child performed with her older sisters as "The Gumm Sisters". In 1935, she was signed to a contract by MGM, who changed her name to Judy Garland. She appeared in some shorts, but in 1937, at Clark Gable's birthday party, she sang "
You Made Me Love You
", which was filmed, and got her noticed, and her role as Dorothy in "
The Wizard of Oz
" gave her great fame. She appeared in "Ziegfeld Girl" in 1941, and "For Me and My Gal" in 1942, and she appeared in a series of popular musicals with
Mickey Rooney
. Her personal life was very messy, with many affairs and problems with drugs and alcohol. She married director Vincente Minnelli in 1945, and in 1946 had daughter Liza. She went on to another marriage to Sid Luft, and the remainder of her life was very troubled, but she continued to perform, including giving two excellent film performances in "Judgment at Nuremberg" (where she was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award) and "A Child is Waiting". Some of her other movies include:
Meet Me in St. Louis
, A Star Is Born (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and many more. She passed away in 1969 at the age of 47 from an accidental barbiturate overdose.

More Info on Paul Whiteman and Orchestra
:
Paul Samuel 'Pops' Whiteman (March 28, 1890 – December 29, 1967) was an American bandleader, composer, orchestral director, and violist.
As the leader of one of the most popular dance bands in the United States during the 1920s and early 1930s, Paul Whiteman produced recordings that were immensely successful, and press notices often referred to him as the "
King of Jazz
". His most popular recordings include "Whispering", "Valencia", "Three O'Clock in the Morning", "In a Little Spanish Town", and "
Parade of the Wooden Soldiers
". Whiteman led a usually large ensemble and explored many styles of music, such as blending symphonic music and jazz, as in his debut of Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin.
More Info on Busby Berkeley
:
Busby Berkeley was born in 1895. He was a Broadway choreographer in the 1920s, but when sound came to movies, it was natural to make musicals, and when Eddie Cantor was making Whoopee in 1930, he hired Berkeley to choreograph the dance numbers. Musicals took off in 1933, and in that year alone Berkeley choreographed
42nd Street
, Gold Diggers of 1933,
Footlight Parade
, and Roman Scandals! That same year he also got a chance to completely direct a movie, and by the late 1930s he was directing musicals and non-musicals, while still doing lots of choreography on other movies. Berkeley is likely best remembered for the elaborate overhead shots of dancers (performing dances which only made sense when viewed from above), which became his "trademark" and which was included in almost all his musicals. In his early 1930s musicals, many of the dancers wore incredibly skimpy outfits, sometimes only covered by props of one sort or another. In the late 1930s musicals became less popular, but Berkeley helped somewhat revive them with the
Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney
ones in the early 1940s, and with the
Esther Williams
ones in the early 1950s (where he staged remarkable dance-like sequences in and under the water!). He passed away in 1976 at the age of 80.
